Portelli to end big week with Randwick win

Tuesday 22 July 2014, 6:13pm

The best horse in Gary Portelli's stable will step out in a barrier trial this week but the trainer will be relying on a trio of youngsters to pay the bills at Randwick.

Portelli will give Rebel Dane a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on Friday as the Group One winner prepares for a Missile Stakes start at Randwick on August 9 as his lead-in run to the Memsie Stakes.

But he will be just as interested in how Rebel Dane's younger sibling Texardini handles her first race-day experience at Canterbury on Wednesday.

"She's more a staying prospect than a sprinting prospect," Portelli said.

His chance for a stable pay-day to complete the racing season rests with three two-year-olds in a 1550-metre race on the Kensington track at Randwick.

Portelli's trio includes last-start winner Testashadow, another staying type in Russet and maiden filly Fast Nitz.

Testashadow confirmed the worth of a fast-finishing Warwick Farm placing to beat Good Project over 1400m at Randwick.

He goes up 2kg on Saturday but Portelli can see no reason why he can't send the colt to the spelling paddock on a winning note.

"This race was available and I thought we should have another throw at the stumps," Portelli said.

"It would be nice for him to win another race before he goes for a break just in case he isn't going to make the next level."

While Testashadow appeals as a horse for the moment, Portelli is adamant Russet is one for later on.

"If you saw him going through the line late in Testashadow's race you could see him just starting to work it all out," Portelli said.

"Hopefully he took something out of that and he might turn the corner and run a real good race.

"And then we can sit down and work out if he is a spring carnival horse or aim at the autumn with him."
