Comeback galloper Epic confirmed he was on course for a possible southern spring campaign with a comprehensive win at Doomben on Saturday.
Epic ($4.20) gave apprentice Anthony Allen and trainer Kelly Schweida a winning double when he scored in the Bottle-O Handicap (1630m).
It is an understatement to say Epic has had a stop-start racing career because of injuries.
After showing potential early on, Epic spent 10 months in the paddock with a leg injury in 2012 but returned to win three races in 2013.
"We then tried him in the Lord Mayors Cup and he finished third behind the Group One horse Solzhenitsyn. But he got galloped on in that race and was out again for seven months," Schweida said.
Epic was having his fourth run back from a break on Saturday and appreciated a clever ride from Allen who outrode his city allowance earlier on the day on the Schweida-trained Discreet.
"There is a 1600-metre race in a fortnight and then we will probably have a look at what is about in Sydney in the spring. I think he can get out to 1800 metres or even 2000 metres," Schweida said.
Meanwhile, Beau Appo took advantage of fellow apprentice Luke Tarrant being on holiday in Bali to ride his first metropolitan double on Solebid ($14) and Oak 'N' Arthur ($4.40).
Trainer John Morrisey said Oak 'N' Arthur had surprised the stable because they felt he was far better on wet tracks.
"We thought we would get a couple of nice wet days during the winter and he could win some races. As it turned out he has won a couple of races on dry tracks," said Morrisey after Oak 'N' Arthur won the Urban Cellars Handicap (1630m).
Giant two-year-old Mister Booze ($51) confirmed trainer Kristie Clark-Peoples opinion that he was a future top-liner.
"I couldn't believe his price after the way he had worked and trialled recently. I think he might be the best horse I have had," she said.
Mister Booze gave jockey Tim Bell the lead in the Brisbane premiership with his win in the Rawgroup Hospitality Handicap (1200m).
Bell moved to 57 wins, one clear of Michael Cahill.
