A double at Randwick went some way to compensating Newcastle trainer Kris Lees after Paul Perry took out their local premiership.
The two went into Saturday's Newcastle meeting level-pegging but Perry sealed the title with two winners to Lees' one.
Lees made the trip to Sydney to watch Oriental Lady and Gold Epona both score in tight finishes under hard riding from Brenton Avdulla.
Oriental Lady fought back at the end of her 2400-metre race to beat Saigon Tea by a nose while sprinter Gold Epona came out of the pack to win the 1150-metre race for fillies and mares by a long head over I'm In The Money.
Gold Epona failed when last in the Group Three Dark Jewel at Scone in May while Oriental Lady has won three of five starts since being imported from Germany.
"A double at Randwick helps with not winning the premiership at home," Lees said.
"Oriental Lady will be set for the Newcastle Cup in a couple of months.
"We didn't do much with Gold Epona after Scone.
"We think a lot of her which is why we put her in the stakes race in the first place.
"She has been a lot more switched on in her work and it's good to have her back in form."
