Moreira considers a move to Australia

Thursday 6 December 2012, 11:55am

Top jockey Joao Moreira has revealed he will consider a move to Australia or Hong Kong in the near future to test himself in one of racing's toughest arenas.

The Brazilian-born, Singapore-based Moreira has ridden in Australia a handful of times, usually at the request of Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm.

He took centre stage at Wednesday night's Happy Valley meeting when he won the International Jockeys' Championship, later revealing he wanted to step outside his comfort zone before he eventually returned home to Brazil.

"I have thought for some time about riding in Hong Kong. I think everyone wants to try themselves at the highest level against the best competition," Moreira told the South China Morning Post.

"I love riding in Singapore and everything has been going so well there that I didn't want to leave.

"But before I go home to Brazil, I know I would like to try myself somewhere else and maybe it will be Hong Kong.

"It could be Australia, too, but I know I will try somewhere else before I leave Asia and return home."

Moreira won the jockeys' series in thrilling circumstances when he landed a last stride victory aboard Noble Deluxe in the final leg to deny Zac Purton the $HK500,000 winner's cheque.

Hong Kong will continue to hold the racing spotlight with its International Race Day at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Australian hopes rest with Sea Siren in the Sprint and Alcopop in the Cup.
