West Australian apprentice Chris Parnham will be out to build on his initial success in Victoria when he rides in feature races at Sandown on Boxing Day.
Parnham, a son of prominent West Australian trainer Neville Parnham, rode at Bendigo on Sunday and made the trip count with wins in his only two rides.
"It was quite a good experience, especially riding two winners from my first two rides," Parnham said.
"People see that and they think good things, so a few people have taken notice."
The 17-year-old is just three wins short of losing his claim, having ridden 77 metropolitan wins in WA.
He has been booked for four rides at Sandown, all for the Leon and Troy Corstens stable.
They include Tried And Tired and Sweet As Bro in the Listed Christmas Stakes and Listed Lord Stakes respectively.
"I wasn't really expecting it," Parnham said.
"I just got a message this morning from Troy Corstens seeing if I was interested in coming over, and I said `yeah'."
Parnham has also picked up two rides at Moonee Valley on Saturday and a ride at Mornington on Sunday in what could be a precursor to a stint in Victoria next year.
"Maybe some time in January I'll come over and maybe ride for a few months and see how it goes," Parnham said.
"But I've only got three winners left of my metropolitan claim so it's probably going to be a bit harder without my claim."
When Wez Hunter was in WA with Smokin' Joey for the Railway Stakes and Kingston Town Stakes recently, the Mornington-based trainer invited Parnham to ride work in Victoria for a couple of weeks while the apprentice served a careless riding suspension.
That led to Parnham riding the Hunter-trained two-year-old Parcel to victory at Bendigo.
"I got suspended on one of the big days in Perth when he (Hunter) was over here and he asked if I'd like to come over to Melbourne to ride trackwork while I was suspended," Parnham said.
"I trialled Parcel and she trialled well so I asked him if I could come back and ride it.
"Then I picked up the other ride and lucky enough they both won."
After riding in Victoria later this week Parnham's attention will shift to one of Perth's biggest race days on New Year's Day.
He rides Bass Strait in the Group Two Perth Cup.
