While expensive colt Emaratee is still to make his debut, his younger sibling Headwater is ready to run at Moonee Valley.
Both sons of the 2003 Group One Oakleigh Plate winner, River Dove, are stablemates in the two-state training operation of John Hawkes and his sons Wayne and Michael.
Emaratee was a $4 million Easter yearling in 2013 while Headwater, who is set to have his first start in the Cactus Imaging Plate over 1000m at Moonee Valley on Saturday, cost $500,000 this year.
The two colts are three-quarter brothers, both being by sons of Danehill, with Headwater by Exceed And Excel and Emaratee by Fastnet Rock.
Wayne Hawkes said both horses were impressive individuals but Headwater had developed quicker than his elder sibling and was ready to make his debut.
He said Headwater has done everything right in his preparation and looked good in a jump-out over 800m at Flemington last Friday.
"It was only a jump-out," Hawkes said.
"He's done everything right but race day is a different story.
"They've still got to got out and do it."
Hawkes said Headwater had shuttled between the Sydney and Melbourne stables as part of his education but had been at Flemington for some time.
Emaratee has also been back and forth between the two stables but Hawkes says he is immature and his debut is still a little way off.
The colt made his first public appearance when fifth in a Rosehill barrier trial last month.
"He's a lovely horse. It's just he's immature," Hawkes said.
"When they're immature you've just got to look after them and give them time because if you don't you'll only do some damage and they'll fall about."
"He's a Fastnet Rock and most of them aren't two-year-olds, they're three-year-olds plus.
"He'll tell us when he's ready."
