Bloodlines a boost for Flamenco: Bougoure

Friday 26 December 2014, 12:27pm

A close study of Flamenco Girl's pedigree has trainer Dan Bougoure growing in confidence she can win the Magic Millions Classic.

Flamenco Girl will have her final run before the Classic on January 10 in the Group Three BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Bougoure has added blinkers to Flamenco Girl's race-day gear for the first time in Saturday's race.

He admitted that he probably would not have run the filly on Saturday had she not been beaten into second place in a photo finish in the Calaway Gal Stakes at Doomben two weeks ago.

"She is on $30,400 in prize money and about number 14 in the order of entry for the Classic. It should be enough but when you are around there in the qualifiers you want to make certain," Bougoure said.

He has no doubt Flamenco Girl will be better over 1200m with her two previous starts at 1000m.

"After she ran second at Doomben I had a close look at her pedigree. She is the first one in four dams to have won at 1000m (at the Sunshine Coast), so she has done a good job already."

Bougoure went close to winning the Classic last January when Oakleigh Girl was second to Unencumbered.

"They are different types of fillies. Oakleigh Girl was a get-out-and-go sort while Flamenco Girl gets back a bit and runs home hard," he said.

"But the addition of blinkers should see her a bit closer this time."

Flamenco Girl cost $220,000 at the Magic Millions Sales and is raced by Bougoure's biggest client in Steve Gillard's wife Louise and two of her friends.

Her ownership group means Flamenco Girl is also eligible for the $500,000 bonus in the Classic.

"They went close with Oakleigh Girl last year and she picked up a big bonus for running second. Hopefully we can go one better this year," Bougoure said.
