Champion trainer Lee Freedman will be happy if three-year-old Minnesinger turns out to be half as talented as the colt's late mother Serenade Rose.
And an impressive victory at Sandown on Wednesday showed that Minnesinger does have plenty to offer.
Minnesinger is the third foal from the multiple Group One-winning mare who Freedman prepared to win eight races including the VRC Oaks-AJC Oaks double in 2005-06.
Serenade Rose died shortly after giving birth to Minnesinger in 2011.
Her final foal could well be her best judging by Minnesinger's effort to raise the bar from a Kilmore maiden win last month to score an eye-catching last-to-first victory in the Betty McDowell Elsternwick Handicap (1600m) at Sandown.
Freedman, who rejoined the training ranks in late November when he formed a partnership with his brother Anthony, said he had a good opinion of Minnesinger but was unsure whether the horse would reach Group level this campaign.
"He's potentially a high-class colt. That wasn't a good race today but he put them away very quickly," Freedman said.
"He's got to still do it but I think the ability is there."
Minnesinger is among nominations for the Australian Guineas next month, along with stablemates and fellow Godolphin-owned gallopers Nozomi and Java.
"He would have to really please me to take a leap like that," Freedman said.
"Whether he does it this time in or next time in, I'm not sure, but I think he has got it there."
Winning jockey Dwayne Dunn also had high praise for Minnesinger.
Dunn was concerned about the lack of pace in Wednesday's race after Minnesinger ($4.20 fav) found himself second last in the early stages.
But after getting to the outside at the top of the straight the colt unleashed a strong turn of foot to defeat Free On Saturday by 1-3/4 lengths with a length to Purreal in third.
"I think he's a really nice horse and hopefully he has a really nice autumn," Dunn said.
