His sire is best known for his sprinters but the stamina influence provided on the other side of Master Agar's pedigree could be tested in one of Australia's oldest Classic races.
Having his third start, Master Agar broke through for his first win after a deft ride from Sam Clipperton in the Hyland Race Colours Maiden Handicap at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
His winning margin was narrow but it was enough for Ron Quinton to at least think about an ATC Australian Derby nomination for a horse which is built to cope with the demands of a staying campaign.
Master Agar's sire is Not A Single Doubt, a stallion which has made his reputation at stud with speedsters like Miracles Of Life and Karuta Queen.
It's his mother, the Zabeel mare Get The Hint, which Quinton expects will provide a clue to the future.
"He's gone the Zabeel way and not the Not A Single Doubt way because he's taken a long time to mature," Quinton said.
"He does appear he is a genuine staying type. He'll be `nommed' for the Derby but there are a lot of steps in the ladder to climb yet.
"But if they can stay you are always a chance."
Master Agar had $9.50 to $8 backing before getting the better of Kanji ($7.50) to win by a half head.
Apprentice Deanne Panya had reason for celebration when she landed her first city winner on Lightning Gail.
In a replica of her Kembla Grange ride when Lightning Gail made a winning return to racing, Panya made all the running to give trainer Theresa Bateup her second metropolitan success.
