Golden Slipper plans for two-year-old Mishani Honcho are up in the air after he was beaten at long odds-on at Doomben on Saturday.
Mishani Honcho ($1.60) was attempting to win his fifth race for the season when he finished third behind stablemate One Standout ($8.50) in the Coca Cola Amatil Handicap.
After being tardy at the start, Mishani Honcho settled in second last place before running home strongly.
Mishani Honcho had been on target for a possible Golden Slipper or ATC Sires' Produce run.
However, trainer Les Ross said despite Mishani Honcho having no luck he had been disappointed with the effort.
"I suppose it was a case of the need for an old head on young shoulders," Ross said.
"He (apprentice James Orman) probably should have whipped around them at the 800 metres but it was one of those situations,."
Meanwhile, Toowoomba trainer Matt Kropp's hard work with veteran gelding Kiss Me Deadly's feet paid off with a shock win in the Jim Beam Handicap (1600m).
Apprentice Rikki Jamieson took Kiss Me Deadly ($31) to the lead and he fought on in the straight to beat Harada Bay ($3.40) by three quarters of a length.
"I finally have his feet the best they have ever been. That combined with Rikki's (Jamieson) claim and a soft lead were perfect for him today," Kropp said.
Kiss Me Deadly won three metropolitan races in a row last year and Kropp is hopeful he is back near that form.
