Winter carnival hopeful Artibai completed a stellar performance for Kris Lees when he gave the Newcastle trainer his sixth winner for the day at Doomben on Saturday.
Lees had earlier won the first race at Rosehill with Marple Miss as well as four races at Newcastle with Knit N Purl, Land Grant, Danish Twist and Who's Next.
However, Artibai, who is raced in the same colours as Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist, could easily prove the best of Saturday's winners.
Jockey Damian Browne gave Artibai every chance before the gelding won the the Powerade Handicap (2200m).
Stable representative Jock Gollogly said Artibai would return to Sydney but would be back in Brisbane for the winter.
"Artibai could be set for some of the Listed staying-type races during the winter. He is no Protectionist but he is pretty handy," Gollogly said.
Browne said Artibai had travelled well and had picked up when asked for an effort like a good horse should.
Trainer Ben Currie is determined to spell promising three-year-old Cantbuybetter ($4.40) despite his easy win in the Canadian Club Handicap.
"That made it four wins from four starts and I suppose the temptation is to continue on with him. But I want to have a good horse next year and I think a spell is in order," Currie said.
In-form mare Diamond Fund will get her chance in black-type fillies and mares races after scoring her fourth win in a row in the Makers Mark Handicap (1350m).
"On her efforts of late she deserves a go at something better," trainer Matthew Dunn said.
Scone mare Just A Girl will remain in Queensland for at least one more start after her upset win in the Coke Zero Handicap (1050m).
Trainer Luke Griffith said he had brought Just A Girl north to get away from the top gallopers in Sydney but had run into a hot field on Saturday.
"It really was a smart field today but we gave her a good chance on her work. She really tries hard," Griffith said.
