Rommel races into Aust Guineas contention

Saturday 28 February 2015, 2:16pm

Perth galloper Rommel strengthened his claims for the Australian Guineas with a last-stride win in the Zeditave Stakes at Caulfield.

In a family affair, Rommel ($8.50) was ridden by apprentice son Chris Parnham for his trainer-father Neville and scored a half-head win over Galaxy Pegasus ($6) on Saturday.

Rommel defeated fellow Perth galloper Disposition in the WA Guineas in November and they are set for a return clash in the Australian Guineas.

"This was bit of an insurance run to make sure he's pretty solid for next week's Guineas," Neville Parnham said.

"I'm well aware that these aren't Australian Guineas horses but he'll be much better suited at the 1600 metres and I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Chris Parnham will make way for older brother Steven at Flemington.
