Sertorius ready to go in G3 Easter Cup

Friday 3 April 2015, 11:26am

Trainer Jamie Edwards is adamant Sertorius will not be lacking for fitness when he attempts to end a light autumn campaign on a winning note in the Easter Cup.

Sertorius was second to Group One winner Suavito in the Blamey Stakes and steps to 2000 metres second-up in Saturday's Group Three race at Caulfield.

Edwards noted Sertorius had not raced over 1600m first-up before this campaign but said the gelding went into the Blamey wound up and ran as good as he could.

And he says the seven-year-old is looking for every bit of the Easter Cup journey.

"He's ready," Edwards, who trains in partnership with Bruce Elkington, said.

"He's got no improvement and he'll go as good as he can go and if that's good enough, great. If it's not then so be it.

"We won't take the horse to the races in any better condition."

Edwards is convinced a repeat of Sertorius' Blamey Stakes effort will have him around the mark in the race where his opposition includes Tasmanian star The Cleaner.

The Cleaner turned in a typically tenacious performance for fourth in the Australian Cup and holds favouritism over Sertorius.

Sertorius competed well in a bunch of top races during last year's autumn carnival culminating in a third in the Sydney Cup.

Edwards said that tough campaign - which included a second, third, fourth and fifth at Group One level - took its toll on the horse who didn't come up to expectations in the spring.

He was given a good break and connections pencilled in a two-run autumn.

"He won't have been heavily taxed in the autumn and hopefully we'll have a really good spring," Edwards said.

Edwards will be realistic about Sertorius' spring targets, however, noting the gelding appeared to be a couple of lengths off top Group One horses.

Sertorius won the Group Two Zipping Classic in the 2013 spring.

Jockey Noel Callow replaces the suspended Ryan Maloney on Saturday and Edwards believes Sertorius is drawn to stalk The Cleaner.

"These older horses, their form is very exposed so you're not guessing how good they are," he said.

"What you see is what you get and he's a very fit, healthy, sound horse.

"There should be good tempo in the race which should suit us."
