The first part of a two-race plan has worked out for the connections of Husson Eagle at Caulfield.
Husson Eagle was gelded last spring with a race in Melbourne and another one in Adelaide being the three-year-old's autumn targets.
He made a flying start in taking out the Bill Collins Handicap (1000m) on Saturday to earn his chance in the Group Two Euclase Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 2.
Ridden by Steven Arnold, Husson Eagle, the $3.70 favourite, scored a half-length victory over Good Offa ($15) with Durendal ($8.50) a short half-head away third.
"He was a bit of a handful so we decided to cut him, give him a good break and bring him back for two runs this campaign," owner Joe O'Neill said.
"He's a serious sprinter this horse and he's probably a better 1200-metre horse."
The victory was tough work for Arnold who was in a distressed state after the race.
"Obviously losing weight all the time doesn't help but I've bounced back after a drink," Arnold said.
Arnold said Husson Eagle was suited by a fast pace but also has a good turn of foot.
"It was more a case of riding the horse rather than the race today," he said.
