Tough colt Montana Star proved himself a genuine winter carnival horse but it was his stablemate Typing who had trainer Stewart Kendrick smiling on Saturday.
Montana Star ($3.40) went straight to the front to beat Lady No More ($9) by a length with a long neck to Typing ($11) in the Racing Retro Handicap at Doomben.
Kendrick believes Montana Star could measure up to the Group Two BRC Sires' Produce Stakes (1350m) on May 30 and possibly the Group One JJ Atkins Stakes (1600m) on June 6.
He said while Montana Star had already he had four runs this campaign the colt was standing up to racing in style.
"He was bouncing around the enclosure before the race today and provided he comes up we will continue on with him."
It won't worry Kendrick if Brisbane's wet year continues as Montana Star has won both his races on heavy tracks.
Kendrick was also pleased with the run of Typing who came from a long way back in the field.
"She was one of the few in the race to make up a lot of ground. I was really pleased with her and she might be up to something better," Kendrick said.
Typing is by top sire Sebring out of Zabeel mare My Type and Kendrick believes she will be better over 1600m or further.
Kendrick made it a winning double and produced another possible winter horse when Gherardini won the Carnival Ball Handicap(1200m).
"That was her third win in a row and she should have won the race before that. She really is racing well and the good thing is she can switch off and then sprint quickly," Kendrick said.
