Trainer Donald Baker's formguide study helped him find bargain-buy Hello Hornsby, a winner at Doomben on Saturday.
Hello Hornsby ($9.50) charged home to grab De Lago Jet ($71) and win by a half head in the Coca Cola Amatil Handicap (1050m).
The filly had four starts in Victoria for a Bendigo placing when trained by Cameron Templeton.
Baker was debating whether to buy Hello Hornsby when he looked at her form when he noticed the filly had run sixth in the Group Three Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington.
He said he spoke to his friend Paul Hamblin, a former Brisbane jockey who is now a jumps rider in Victoria, looking to buy a horse.
"Paul put me in touch with the owners of Hello Hornsby," Baker said.
"They sold her to me for $6000 and it certainly was a good investment."
"Also I bought her for missus (Peta Siebenhausen) so it was a good result all around. I will be in the good books now."
Hello Hornsby returned Baker $41,600 in Saturday's race and he believes there is more to come.
Meanwhile, another former southern galloper Monaco Doll ($21) continued a good start to the day for bookmakers when she won the Coca Cola Life Handicap (2220m).
Monaco Doll went to stud last year but failed to get in foal and was sent to Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds.
"She is well bred for a stayer being by High Chaparral and she was out to her right distance today," Edmonds said.
