Gotta Take Care gearing for jumps return

Monday 20 April 2015, 4:35pm

One more flat run will have champion hurdler Gotta Take Care primed for his early season target.

The Darren Weir-trained gelding will contest the ANZAC Centenary Cup (2600m) at Flemington on Saturday before heading to Warrnambool to defend the Galleywood Hurdle on the middle day of the three day carnival.

Gotta Take Care, the reigning Australian Jumper of the Year, has been mixing flat racing with schooling over hurdles in preparation for a return to the jumps.

He has had four starts interspersed with hurdle schools since he returned in February.

Gotta Take Care was a last-start 3-1/2 length seventh behind Crafty Cruiser over 2500m at Flemington on April 11 and he has since ventured to Warrnambool to score a five length win in a hurdle school.

"The Galleywood is what he's been set for," Weir said.

"He'll run on Saturday and then he'll run in the Galleywood.

"He ran a bit better last start. He's slowly getting there."

Gotta Take Care won the corresponding race at last year's Anzac Day meeting before going on to claim the Galleywood on a heavy track five days later.

This year's Galleywood will be run on May 6, a week later than last year.

With 20 wins from 76 starts, Gotta Take Care has won nine of his 18 starts over hurdles for career prize money of just over $1 million, most of that earned over jumps.
