Freedman pair to step out in St Leger

Lee and Anthony Freedman know a thing or two about winning feature staying races at Flemington.

As a trainer in his own right, Lee Freedman won Melbourne Cups, Victoria Derbys and the Victorian Oaks.

While younger brother Anthony has often taken a back seat, he has also been an integral part of the operation.

Now together as an official training partnership, the Freedmans will on Saturday saddle-up Authoritarian and Berserk in the VRC St Leger over 2800m.

Authoritarian and Berserk are two of 14 runners in the Listed race that was once seen as a springboard to the Melbourne spring carnival.

This year's renewal looks to be down on class compared to recent editions with the Bart and James Cummings-trained Colour Of Money the highest rated runner on 66 points.

With rain forecast, Lee Freedman says the best stayer will win the race.

Freedman expects Authoritarian, a last-start winner of a 2400m maiden race at Geelong on soft ground, to have no trouble handling either the trip or a wet track.

"He's been a slow developing horse," Freedman said.

"He's by Authorized who is a renowned sire of stayers and if the rain came then his chances would be really boosted.

"He got through the wet really well at Geelong and I think that is his caper."

Freedman isn't as certain that Berserk will run out a strong 2800m after the son of Al Maher finished sixth behind Manapine in the Galilee Series Final over 2500m at Flemington on April 11.

Freedman said the gelding wasn't suited leading last time and didn't get a true chance to prove whether or could stay the trip.

"He was booted up out of the gates and the horse got over travelling and leading," Freedman said.

"What gives us some heart is that he didn't drop right out in the straight.

"He's an honest, consistent horse and ridden differently he might run well."

Ben Melham has retained the ride on Berserk while Daniel Moor will partner Authoritarian.
