A step up in distance may just be the catalyst trainer John Sadler is looking for with Secret Blend at Caulfield.
Following successive wins at Ballarat and Moonee Valley, Secret Blend disappointed when he finished down the track over 1000 metres at Caulfield at his latest outing.
Sadler said the son of Kaphero was given little peace in that race and thinks the rise to 1200m in the Canaccord Genuity Handicap on Saturday will be ideal.
"He was terribly disappointing the other day," Sadler said.
"At the 1000 (metres) he was forced to be there and was off the bit the whole way and I don't think that suited him.
"He had been good at his previous couple but against weaker company and we'll see on Saturday whether he steps it up or not."
Secret Blend had been successful for Sadler's son Tom and fellow apprentice Patrick Moloney at his two wins this campaign but neither can ride on Saturday.
Jackie Beriman has picked up the mount and with her 1.5kg claim Secret Blend will carry 53kg with Tom Sadler unable to ride below 56kg and Moloney on the suspended list.
While Sadler hopes Secret Blend can recapture winning form at Caulfield he also has two strong hopes in black type races at Morphettville.
Vain Queen shares the top line of betting with Miracles Of Life for the Group One Sangster Stakes (1200m) while Japhils, winner of last Saturday's Listed Nitschke Stakes, backs up in the Group Two Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m).
Sadler said barrier 13 would make it tricky for Vain Queen.
"I had a look at the speed and there doesn't look to be a lot of pace," he said.
"From that draw you have to either go forward or go back and to go back when there doesn't look a lot of speed could be detrimental."
Sadler said Japhils' barrier 12 of 13 was not ideal but she had done well since her win.
