The race that launched the career of Paul Messara's first racetrack star will be an important stepping stone in the development of his latest prodigy.
Messara will saddle up Rekindled Power in the Group Three Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) on Saturday, the same race Alverta won in 2007 on the way to becoming a Group One winner in Australia and being placed in England's July Cup.
"It was my first stakes winner about eight years ago so hopefully we can win another one," Messara said.
Rekindled Power has big shoes to fill if he is to emulate Alverta's success but the horse has shown promise in his own right.
A creditable sixth in the Sandown Guineas in his first racing campaign, he resumed with an eye-catching third to Delectation in the Group Three Arrowfield Sprint during the Sydney autumn carnival.
It was his first taste of a heavy track and he is likely to face similar conditions at Hawkesbury.
"He came through the race really well. Three weeks between runs is perfect for him and I'm really happy with him going into this next one," Messara said.
Rekindled Power will have a maximum of 11 rivals on Saturday following the early scratching of Mandalong Kiss.
TAB has marked him the $4 second pick behind Godolphin three-year-old Federal, a last-start Listed winner on heavy ground.
The Hawkesbury race is one of three Guineas events Messara is hoping to target with Rekindled Power who will head north after Saturday for the Sunshine Coast Guineas in three weeks and Queensland Guineas on June 6.
