Cassidy laments proper racetrack upkeep

Saturday 2 May 2015, 4:45pm

Veteran jockey Jimmy Cassidy says the the NSW racing industry must use additional resources to ensure racetracks across the state are kept in a safe condition.

Cassidy claims there are not enough staff to carry out proper remedial work during racedays.

"I'm not knocking racecourse managers," Cassidy said.

"I'm saying there needs to be more people on racetracks filling in divots and if they have got to roll the track to stop those divots getting bigger, so be it."

Cassidy's observation on the state of NSW's racetracks came as soon as stewards called off Saturday's $1 million meeting at Hawkesbury because of concerns for riders' safety on a rain-affected surface.

"Whether it's Hawkesbury, Canterbury, Randwick or any racetrack the holes must be maintained and filled up properly so when we get this rain you're not getting beautiful lush grass and then a hole," Cassidy said.

"When horses put their foot back into a divot it rips it out and makes it a bigger hole.

"Jockeys can't ride out there to avoid holes. We're concentrating on trying to win the race without dodging holes."

Cassidy said the issue had become so serious, the industry should look at employing extra track maintenance staff at the expense of stakes levels.

"If they have to cut back prize money to have more people maintain tracks, I'm all for it," he said.
