Master Of Arts earns trip to Qld Derby

Saturday 2 May 2015, 4:52pm

Trainer Darren Weir has added to his Group One arsenal heading to Brisbane following the win of Master Of Arts at Caulfield.

Weir has nominated Trust In A Gust, Lucky Hussler, Unfurl, Keep The Klass, Rather Heroic and Master Of Arts for the Brisbane Group One races which kick off next weekend.

The lightly raced Master Of Arts is being aimed for the Group One Queensland Derby (2200m) at Doomben on June 6 following his strong staying performance in the Terminus Hotel Healesville Plate (2000m) on Saturday.

Ridden by apprentice Jye McNeil, Master Of Arts ($3 fav) scored a half neck victory over All I Survey ($12) with Show A Star ($3.80) 1-1/4 lengths away third.

Weir was in Adelaide on Saturday for Atlantis Dream's Group Two win in the Queen Of The South at Morphettville.

His racing manager Jeremy Rogers said Master Of Arts was a developing stayer that would not be bothered by a wet Brisbane winter.

Master Of Arts has graduated from a debut Terang maiden win to success over 2000m on Saturday in four starts with the promise of more to come.

"The further he gets in his races the better he gets and he looks like a nice stayer," Rogers said.

"In two weeks time there's another 2000 metre race here and he'll run in that and all going well after that he'll go up to Brisbane."

"This year the Queensland Derby is 2200 metres and he's a Mastercraftsman and if it's wet he should handle it all right."

McNeil said Master Of Arts was worked up behind the barriers before the race and raced greenly.

"When he got to the front he wanted to duck in and have a look around," McNeil said.

"Before the race he got really worked up so I think there's quite a lot of improvement still to come from him."
