Lees relies on girl power for Scone bid

Thursday 14 May 2015, 3:23pm

French import Doukhan's status as a gelding almost certainly helped him secure a spot on the float to Scone as part of trainer Kris Lees' 10-strong team for Saturday's meeting.

In a situation that might overwhelm an entire, Doukhan's nine travelling companions on the two-hour road trip will be female thoroughbreds.

"It's a great carnival and it has good black-type races for our horses, especially the fillies and mares," Lees said.

Lees will spread his squad across six races including a quartet of runners in the Listed Denise's Joy Stakes for three-year-old fillies.

The foursome includes Felines, a filly which started an odds-on favourite in a restricted midweek race 11 months ago only to be narrowly beaten by subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner Shooting To Win.

"She should have beaten Shooting To Win that day too, she ran off the track," Lees said.

"Off the back of that she had a mixed preparation. Mentally, it has taken us 12 months to get her back on track."

Stablemate Onemorezeta is another who hasn't reached the heights expected since scoring a Group Three win during the Melbourne Cup carnival last spring.

Her past two runs have been on soft tracks and Lees expects her to improve on firm ground.

The stable will also have multiple representation in the Group Three Dark Jewel Classic with Tibbie Stakes winner Fine Bubbles and the enigmatic Scorpio Queen.

Fine Bubbles was scheduled to run at the washed-out Hawkesbury meeting last Saturday week and Lees admitted missing that run was a nuisance.

"She was one who didn't go around at Hawkesbury when they were called off. It was some inconvenience but she has done well," Lees said.

"She's racing in career-best form, she's very consistent and this is a race we've thought about aiming her at for a while."

Thump returns from an autumn freshen-up in the Listed Ortensia Stakes, a race Lees won back-to-back with Motspur in 2011-12.

The four-year-old hasn't raced since overdoing it in the Coolmore Classic and Saturday's race will be a starting point in a campaign which could include the Stradbroke Handicap but is more likely to target the Tatt's Tiara.

"She is probably more effective over 1200 or 1400 metres but she could easily run well over 1100 here," Lees said.
