Improving filly Unfurl has booked herself a start in the Queensland Oaks with a hard-fought victory at Caulfield.
The lightly raced daughter of Raise The Flag will head north for a start in the Group One race over 2200 metres after outstaying her rivals in the Herald Sun Plate (2000m).
With trainer Darren Weir in Adelaide for the Goodwood meeting at Morphettville, racing manager Jeremy Rogers said the three-year-old was an improving stayer who would relish the distance in Brisbane.
Providing apprentice Jye McNeil with the second leg of a double, Unfurl ($15) scored by a head from Spur On Gold ($8.50) with Berserk ($41) a nose third.
Rogers said Unfurl was a tough New Zealand-bred filly from the South Island.
"It's great for her getting out to the 2000 metres and she'll probably end up in Brisbane in two weeks time," Rogers said.
"She's a tough filly that's going to keep on improving as the races get longer."
McNeil has no doubt the extra distance of the Oaks in Brisbane will suit Unfurl.
He said she relaxed well during the race and coming to the turn his main problem was going to be getting her to the outside to the best part of the track.
"When she got out she let down and had a really good turn of foot and ran through the line," McNeil said.
"It was her first time at 2000 metres and I thought she might have been getting a bit tired, but she was very tough in the finish."
