David Feek would rather run Lucciola over 2000 metres but the strength of the entries for his preferred race at Flemington has swayed him to test the mare in the longer Andrew Ramsden Stakes.

The trainer's original plan after her third in the Warrnambool Cup (2350m) was to bring her back in distance for a heat of the Banjo Paterson Series on Saturday.

But after looking at Monday's nominations, Feek said the six-year-old would go to the Listed $200,000 Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m).

Feek, who trains in partnership with his wife Coral, says the distance is a query and Lucciola is likely to be ridden differently over the extended trip.

"She'll go to the Andrew Ramsden. The other race is too tough," Feek said.

"I still maintain her ultimate trip is 2000 metres but based on the nominations we'll go to the Andrew Ramsden.

"I hope I'm proven wrong about the distance and with that in mind we'll probably ride her a bit more quietly."

In four starts for the Feeks after being sent to the stable from Western Australia early this year, Lucciola has won the Stony Creek Cup (2100m) and finished third in both the Pakenham Cup (2000m) and Listed Warrnambool Cup.

She is set to be retired to the breeding barn in the spring but Feek is hoping the mare can add to her CV before then.

The Feeks will continue a recent training trend with Lucciola and give her a jump-out on Tuesday morning in preparation for Saturday.

Feek said Lucciola had had a jump-out leading into her past three starts which has seemed to work in her favour.

"Sort of by accident we've developed a system of giving her a jump-out about five days before a race and she's actually having a jump-out at Balnarring tomorrow," Feek said.

"My wife will ride her and it's just a gallop for her. It seems to suit her training.

"We did it going into the Stony Creek Cup. It sounds a bit unorthodox but it's worked for us with this horse and we've stuck with it."

The Andrew Ramsden Stakes has attracted 18 nominations including Adelaide Cup winner Tanby, last-start Flemington winner Sonntag, and Makybe Diva's three-quarter sister La Amistad.
