A timely gear change and firm track helped to propel Mohave back into the winning list in the Queensland Day Stakes at Doomben on Saturday.
Trainer John O'Shea's decision to remove blinkers from Mohave ($8) paid off when the gelding scored by three quarters of a length from She's Miss Devine ($7) with Durendal ($5) a short head away third.
Godolphin spokesman Darren Beadman said O'Shea decided to send Mohave to Queensland to escape wet tracks in Sydney.
"He's a very honest, genuine horse who has been looking for a dry track and he really appreciated getting back on top of the ground today," Beadman said.
"It was a smart move by John to take the blinkers off and change his thought pattern a bit."
Beadman said Mohave's win was a confidence boost for the stable after a sequence of minor placings during the carnival.
"I think we've had seven or eight starters for five seconds since the start of the carnival and I'm so thrilled for the whole team who've been putting in the hard yards," he said.
"We've been knocking on the door up here but we just couldn't get in until today."
Beadman said O'Shea will assess Mohave's progress following Saturday's win before committing to further goals in Queensland.
Ryan Wiggins praised the effort of runner-up She's Miss Devine who stumbled soon after the start.
"She knuckled over coming out of the gates and has a laceration on the inside of her leg but it only looks a superficial wound," Wiggins said.
"To recover from that setback and still run second was a super effort."
