Kareeming has passed a distance test at Moonee Valley to give top apprentice Patrick Moloney a winning treble and trainer Pat Carey a double.
Carey elected to step the last-start Caulfield winner past 2000m for the first time in Saturday's 2500m benchmark race and the gelding was up to the task, winning by a short head over leader Black Jag.
Carey and Moloney had already combined to win with three-year-old filly East Afrika which broke her maiden in the William Hill Handicap (1600m), while Moloney was also successful on Act Of Valour which is trained by his uncle John Moloney.
It moved Moloney into fourth in the Melbourne jockeys' premiership while he leads the apprentices' standings.
Four-year-old Kareeming was third in the run behind leader Black Jag before moving up coming to the home turn to challenge.
Black Jag ($20) was coming back at Kareeming ($8) on the line but he held on to win with Lady Cumquat ($8) another half length away third.
"He was going to a mile and a half for the first time which I knew was a real challenge for the horse, and make no mistake Black Jag is a pretty tough customer to get past when he's in form," Carey said.
"I think he'll benefit from this having now had his first crack at the journey.
