A dominant return to racing has trainer John Price looking towards the city with smart filly Tykiato.
Resuming on the synthetic track at Geelong on Tuesday, the three-year-old was a class above her rivals in the Geelong Advertiser F&M BM64 Handicap (1100m), sitting one-out, one-back before letting down strongly to win by three lengths. It was the win of a horse with plenty of upside and the Cranbourne trainer was thrilled.
“It’s always good to win - they’re all a relief, especially when they’re favourite,” Price said. “I’m just rapt - she’s won it like she’s going to win a few more. There’s a couple of Caulfield races coming up, whether it’s a bit soon or not (we’ll find out), but we certainly can’t wait to get her to town.”
Tykiato has only missed a place once in her five starts - when she finished fourth behind Wild Rain at Moonee Valley in January. The $6500 purchase has returned in terrific fashion and Price thinks there are better wins in store. “I think so and she’s building in constitution all the time,” he said. “She’s still a little bit fragile and you’ve got to space her runs and monitor in between them but she is getting better and better. Hopefully we’ve got a number of preparations to come.”
Jockey Ryan Maloney was impressed. “You’d love a stable full of them,” he said returning to scale.“She’s a bit of hard work, but she repays you because she gives you everything she’s got every time she goes around. There’s no better feeling when you get to the outside of them and you’ve still got a lapful of horse. It was really easy. The way she let down today, she’s got a lot more wins in her.”
CONGRATS to all 20 owners of the filly. At just 'a grand' a share, she looks pretty good value now!
