Michael Dunne did many good deals during his years as an elite car dealer but few would match his first venture into horse breeding.
Dunne bred the promising staying mare Fifteen Love ($5.50) who won the Sirromet Hcp (2170m) by six lengths at Ipswich on Wednesday.
For many years Dunne was one of Queensland's leading Mercedes Benz representatives but he also maintained an interest in horse racing.
"I had a client in Melbourne who was breeding horses but eventually he gave it away. I told him I always wanted to breed a horse and he gave me a broodmare named Plumway," Dunne said.
"Another one of my clients was Tubby Turner from Alma Vale Stud and he gave me a service to Ukok Warror who was a Danehill stallion."
"The result was Fiteen Love and we named her because of her brand which is 15 over 0," Dunne said.
He sent the horse to trainer Bruce Brown and then got together a team of friends to race her including former Brisbane rugby union players David Phillips and Brett Greene.
"There is a real cross section of people in her and we are having a lot of fun. Hopefully, she will go on to win a Saturday city race for us," Dunne said.
Brown is best known for winning the Golden Slipper with Calaway Gal but he has had many good stayers including the Prime Ministers Cup winner Starmaker and Ipswich cup winner Dixie Kid.
"Fifteen Love worked brilliantly last Saturday and I really thought she would be hard to beat.
This is only her first campaign and I do think she can win in much better company," Brown said.
