Dual Olympic cycling champion Victoria Pendleton admits she is nervous ahead of her highly anticipated debut as an amateur rider at Newbury.
Despite being a novice in the saddle, the 34-year-old announced in March she was training to become a jockey with a long-term aim to compete in the Foxhunter Chase at next year's Cheltenham Festival.
Pendleton has undergone four months of intensive training under a team of experts and has been riding out five times a week for Oxfordshire-based trainer Lawney Hill.
She will ride the Hill-trained Mighty Mambo in the George Frewer Charity Race on Thursday night (Friday AEST).
"I've been training hard and working with the world-class team of experts provided by (sponsor) Betfair and I am excited at the prospect of riding in a race, while feeling a bit nervous as well," Pendleton said.
Hill has been impressed with Pendleton's progress and hailed Britain's most successful female Olympian as a "true professional".
"Victoria has been doing very well, riding out regularly, galloping and schooling the horses, doing everything," Hill said.
"We've been very happy with her progress to this date and she's putting everything into it. Obviously she's a true professional.
"After all the grind of the training you do to become an Olympic champion, I think she's finding this refreshingly different."
