Prominent racehorse syndicator Brad Spicer could well be presenting a trophy to himself at Caulfield.
Word Of Mouth, a horse bought and syndicated by Spicer, is the $2.60 favourite for the final race on Saturday's Caulfield program - the Spicer Thoroughbreds Handicap (2000m).
"I didn't slot in which race I was sponsoring. I just said I would sponsor a race and they made it the last and Word Of Mouth ended up in there. It's just a coincidence, I think," Spicer said.
"Maybe I'll do the presentation and I'll get one of the owners to accept the trophy, but we won't get ahead of ourselves.
"He's still got to go out there and get the job done. He's going from a benchmark 78 into an open handicap.
"There's still that bit of a jump in class and he's got to tick that box and show us that he can do it, but his work has been great and I think he's a horse on the way up."
Word Of Mouth was a luckless second at Randwick two starts ago before returning to Melbourne for a 4-3/4-length win over 2040m at Moonee Valley with apprentice Patrick Moloney aboard.
Michael Dee, who rode four winners at Ballarat on Wednesday, replaces the suspended Moloney on Saturday.
Spicer believes the trip to Sydney was the making of Word Of Mouth even though the result didn't go his way.
"I think sending the horse to Sydney was the best thing for us because he was a bit of a funny traveller," Spicer said.
"I think just spending that long on a float going up there and back - we sent him away a boy and he's come back a man.
"He certainly put the writing on the wall at Moonee Valley."
