Andrew Williamson would love nothing better than to reward the Dumbrell family by winning the Queensland Cup with Barge and Charge.
Formerly trained in Sydney by Anthony Cummings, Barge And Charge has had four starts for Williamson ahead of his task in Saturday's Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) at his new home track of the Sunshine Coast.
"My first job out of school was for the Dumbrells on their property at Junee (in western NSW). My dad sold a lot of cattle and sheep for them," Williamson said.
"They had many horses and stood Volcanic Prince. In fact I think Stan Dumbrell's first horse was the (multiple Group One winner) Myocard."
"The whole family has been great to me for a long time and they send me the occasional horse which isn't good enough for Sydney."
While Barge and Charge's best form in Sydney was around the 1600-1800 metre mark, Williamson believes he has developed into a genuine stayer as evidenced by his win in a heat of the Stayers Challenge (2213m) at Rockhampton at his last start.
"We took him to Rockhampton for an easy win and he did it in style," Williamson said.
"He could have gone around again there and he gives every indication of staying.
"But of course you can never be sure about the 3200 metres until they have a go at it."
One thing that doesn't really worry Williamson is the fact the entire field will carry 58kg after the weights were raised four kilos with the defection of Escado.
"He carried 60 kilograms at Rockhampton and is one of the few in the field dropping in weight," Williamson said.
"He is a big strong horse so 58 kilograms shouldn't worry him."
The trainer added a nose roll to Barge and Charge's race gear at Rockhampton and it helped him settle.
Glen Colless will replace the suspended Brad Stewart on Barge and Charge.
"There are no better distance riders than Glen and at least we know we will get every chance," Williamson said.
