Three runners for Waller in Winter Stakes

Wednesday 15 July 2015, 4:23pm

Chris Waller will have three runners in the feature race at Rosehill on Saturday after confirming Instrumentalist would miss the Winter Stakes in favour of a race in Melbourne.

Waller has opted to kick off the Mornington Cup winner's campaign at Flemington, citing a wide draw in Sydney and a desire to spread his team of horses.

The trainer has pulled the opposite rein with Diametric who has been scratched from the Bruce Gadsden Handicap at Flemington to run at Rosehill.

"I wanted to split them up. Instrumentalist has drawn well down there and Diametric drew wide down there," Waller said.

Diametric joins stablemates You'll Never and Rugged Cross in the Winter Stakes after the import beat one runner home first-up in a leader-dominated Civic Stakes when Waller said Diametric wasn't comfortable on the heavy ground.

He expects a better showing on Saturday but rates You'll Never the top pick of his three runners.

You'll Never has raced 16 times at his home track for four wins and has only once finished outside the top five.

Three of his wins have been over the 1400m journey of Saturday's race and with two wins from four runs this campaign, Waller says he ticks a lot of boxes.

"He's three weeks between runs which for him is good," Waller said.

"He needs speed on though, that's the thing with him.

"I'm probably slightly favouring You'll Never but Rugged Cross on his day with the right race, he's hard to beat."

A field of 13 has accepted for the Winter Stakes including Godolphin's Haussmann and the Kristen Buchanan-trained Two Blue who fought out the finish of the Civic Stakes last start.

Gai Waterhouse will have two runners in Spurtonic and promising four-year-old Liberty's Choice who was Group Two-placed last spring.

The Bob Ingham Handicap has attracted 15 two-year-olds including Voilier who will have his first start since his fifth to subsequent Golden Slipper winner Vancouver in the Todman Stakes in March.
