Trainer Stephen Lee and apprentice Cassie Schmidt conntinued their successful partnership when cheap buy, Right To Roam won on Wednesday.
The Enjoy Sirromet Wines Hcp (1350m) was expected to be a battle between Polynikes ($3.30), Water Boy ($3.40) and Smasher ($5) but none of the trio managed a place.
Right To Roam ($7) responded to a perfect ride from Schmidt to score by two lengths over Kurrawong Dragon ($21) with a further 3/4 length to Landale ($17).
Lee has a simple theory with Right To Roam and that is to keep the horse on the fat side.
"He seems to race best when a bit new. We picked him up for $2,500 as a tried horse and I don't think he has been out of the money for us. He has returned about $30,000 already."
Schmidt is having her best season to date and has ridden 48 overall winners of which 14 have been for Ballina-based Lee.
"She has been great for us and she comes down to ride work to help get the horses ready. We have stuck with her from the start of her career," Lee said.
Trainer Liam Birchley continued his almost unstoppable run when True Passion ($4.80) won the Ray White Hcp (1020m).
Birchley has had seven winners in the past seven days on tracks from Grafton to the Sunshine Coast, including a Doomben double last Saturday.
True Passion gave jockey Michael Cahill a winning double after he had earlier scored on Relampago.
"He wasn't the best to begin but things worked out okay when the pace was on," Cahill said.
Favourite backers had some anxious moments before the shortest priced favourite of the day Carmenere ($1.70) was declared the winner of the Schweppes Plate (1200m).
Carmenere beat Major Improvement ($10) by a nose but Jeff Lloyd on the runner-up fired in a protest alleging interference in the final 200m.
Stewards found while there was contact in the straight they could not alter the result.
Trainer Brad Herne said Carmenere would now go for a spell after recording a win and three placings.
Matt McGuren scored his first metropolitan win as a senior rider when Rosenet ($2.30) won the Pepsi Max Hcp (1200m).
