Damian Browne recovering from knee surgery

Sunday 19 July 2015, 1:44pm

Damian Browne and Larry Cassidy are both recovering well from knee problems and expect to be back next month to boost Brisbane's diminishing jockey numbers.

Only four of the top 10 jockeys rode at Doomben on Saturday because of a combination of injury, suspensions and commitments elsewhere.

Browne hasn't ridden since June 21 at the Sunshine Coast and has undergone clean-up surgery on his knees.

He was Queensland's most successful big-race jockey this season winning two Group One races, the Moir Stakes on Buffering and the Blue Diamond on Pride Of Dubai.

Browne also won New Zealand's richest race, the $1 million Karaka Million on Hardline for Brisbane trainer Liam Birchley.

He has ridden 81 winners overall this year and has a winning strike rate of 24 per cent.

"I have to go back to the doctor on Wednesday. At this stage I haven't even been able to ride track work," Browne said.

"I should be able to get back on a horse at the end of the week and then it will be a couple of weeks of track work before I am ready to ride in a race."

Cassidy expects to be back riding work early next month after having operations on both his knees.

"I am hoping to begin riding work soon and should be back about three quarters of the way through August," Cassidy said.

Cassidy, who has ridden more than 2500 winners so far in his 30-year career, began physiotherapy this week.

Leading apprentice Luke Tarrant is also scheduled to return next month after serving a six-week suspension for reckless riding which cost him any chance of winning the senior Brisbane premiership with Jim Byrne to take the honours.
