Petrology will end his three-year-old days in the final stakes race of the season as he kick-starts a campaign aimed at fulfilling his potential.
The winner of the Sandown Guineas last spring, Petrology has made solid progress in recent weeks in preparation for Saturday's Group Three Bletchingly Stakes (1200m).
Lindsay Park co-trainer Tom Dabernig said Petrology had enjoyed a good break following a brief but fruitless autumn campaign and the Bletchingly Stakes was a nice race to start off his spring campaign.
"He's had two jump-outs and I've been really happy with him," Dabernig said.
"The 1200 (metres) might be a bit sharp but it's a nice race to kick him off."
Petrology had three runs during the autumn and hasn't raced since finishing 12th behind Wandjina in the Australian Guineas at Flemington in March.
Dabernig said Petrology would be nominated for all the major spring races with his early form determining a target.
"He's very effective anywhere from 1400 metres to a mile and even up to 1800," Dabernig said.
"You would think 2000 wouldn't be a problem now that he's a more mature horse but I think we'll just let him place himself as he progresses.
"He didn't have too strong an autumn, so he had time for a good spell and he's come back fit as a fiddle, nice and sound."
Among Petrology's opposition at Caulfield will be Lord Of The Sky who is coming off a disappointing effort in the John Monash Stakes earlier this month.
Trainer Robbie Laing gave him a gallop with stablemate Just For Starters between races at Cranbourne on Sunday.
Laing was satisfied with the work-out and said the four-year-old would have an easy week leading up to the Bletchingly.
