Canterbury to suit Portelli trio

Sydney's wet weather has interrupted the winter preparations of Straturbo and Testashadow with trainer Gary Portelli banking on a rare Saturday meeting at Canterbury to turn things around.

Acknowledged as the most consistent and best draining surface in Sydney, Canterbury is host to an eight-race card on Saturday with Straturbo entered for the July Sprint (1100m) and Testashadow the Benchmark 85 (1250m).

And while Portelli has been frustrated by wet tracks for the pair, he is surprised and delighted by Seeking Asylum who joins them at Canterbury where she runs in the 2YO handicap (1550m).

The filly made a winning debut on June 9 at Bathurst and has had three more starts for a second at Newcastle and wins at Goulburn and Kembla Grange with all four starts so far against older horses.

"At this stage I plan to back her up from her win at Kembla on Saturday," POrtelli said.

"She is a really tough filly and keeps coming back. She cleaned up on Saturday night and is bouncing around like she's brand new.

"She didn't show us a lot early but once she got to the races she showed plenty and keeps stepping up.

"All her starts have been against open age horses. I know she is nearly three but it is still a big thing for a horse to do so much in their first preparation."

While Seeking Asylum has handled the soft tracks, Straturbo and Testashadow have not.

"They are not autumn or spring carnival horses so the plan was to run in the winter and then come back for the summer and go back to the Magic Millions," Portelli said.

"I was relying on El Nino for some dry weather but that certainly hasn't eventuated. We've had the wettest winter for years.

"At least at Canterbury, even if it does rain, it will be a firmer track than anywhere else."

Straturbo won the Magic Millions Sprint in January while Testashadow ran second in the Guineas.

All three of Portelli's runners will be ridden by leading Sydney apprentice Winona Costin.

"She is riding really well and has a natural gift so I'm happy to have her on all of them," Portelli said.
