The first good track at Randwick in six months has brought out the best in Burbero in the Group Two Missile Stakes with trainer Bjorn Baker now setting his sights on the Epsom Handicap.
Baker was forced to find a new jockey when Brodie Loy was injured at Warwick Farm on Wednesday and Rory Hutchings proved an able replacement in the 1200m feature.
With the Baker-trained front-runner Zaratone setting the pace, Hutchings held Burbero ($11) up as long as he could and produced him late with the gelding claiming Weary ($4.60) by a half neck.
Favourite Temple Of Boom ($2.90), who looked as if he had the race in his keeping at the 100m, was overpowered to finish three-quarters of a length third.
"If there is one horse who is special in the stable, it's Burbero," Baker said.
"And to get a good track was perfect. It's what he needs.
"It's a great start to the season and we have to look at the Epsom now.
"A lot of the credit goes to Brodie and I feel for him because he has done so much work with him.
"He is the sort of horse that has to be held up to make just one run and Rory did the job perfectly.
"And it was a big effort for Zaratone to run fourth."
It was a milestone win for New Zealand's champion apprentice Hutchings who is spending the final months of his junior career with Chris Waller in Sydney.
"It's great to get a big win like this," Hutchings said.
"I didn't expect it so quickly. I waited as long as I could on the horse and when I pushed the button he took the gaps."
Burbero won the Group Two Ajax Stakes in the autumn and finished sixth, 2-1/2 lengths behind the winner, Japanese horse Real Impact, in the George Ryder Stakes which was his first Group One attempt.
He is raced by long-time Baker client, New Zealand bloodstock agent Scott Richardson.
Although disappointed Temple Of Boom didn't win, premier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan was not unhappy with his third under premier Sydney apprentice Winona Costin.
"I thought he was ridden very well. He got a lovely run in behind them," Gollan said.
"When you're chasing Zaratone in these races you're vulnerable to swoopers.
"I always felt in the run we were going to get past the two horses in front of us and I guess at Randwick you're worrying about what's coming from behind.
"At the end of the day that's how it panned out.
"I'm really pleased with him. He's nine and still running great races."
The next port of call for Temple Of Boom will be either the Group One Memsie Stakes at Caulfield or the Group Two Warwick Stakes in Sydney.
