Fawkner is on target for his spring return following an exhibition gallop at Caulfield.
The Lloyd Williams-owned galloper was down to resume racing in the Memsie Stakes on Saturday, but was withdrawn after drawing a wide barrier.
Instead Fawkner, ridden by Damien Oliver, took part in a special gallop with imported stablemate Observational.
The pair worked over 1400m and Observational, with Damian Lane aboard, edged out his stablemate.
Nick Williams said Fawkner, the 2013 Caulfield Cup winner and runner-up in last year's Cox Plate, would resume in the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington on September 12.
Fawkner hasn't raced since finishing 10th to Protectionist in last year's Melbourne Cup.
"We'll follow a similar program to last year with Fawkner through to the Cox Plate," Williams said.
Williams said Oliver would partner Fawkner in the Makybe Diva and expects the champion jockey to stick with him through to the Cox Plate.
Observational won his only Australian start, taking out the Golden Mile at Bendigo in March.
