Brisbane jockey fined for betting offences

Wednesday 9 September 2015, 12:23pm

Jockey Brad Stewart has been fined $3000 and given a suspended three-month ban after being found guilty of betting on races.

Racing Queensland stewards opened an inquiry after receiving requested information from betting agencies Tabcorp and CrownBet about the wagering activities of jockeys.

Stewart pleaded guilty to a charge under the Australian Rules of Racing which bars jockeys from betting.

The inquiry heard Stewart placed bets with corporate bookmakers between July 2013 and March 2015.

While Stewart has a previous conviction for betting, stewards found that in the current case he was not betting on races in which he was riding.

Many of the bets were on international races, or greyhound and harness events.

Stewart's three-month penalty has been wholly suspended for 12 months and he will only serve the time if he reoffends within the next year.
