No penalty for Laurie in Shockaholic case

Thursday 24 September 2015, 6:04pm

Trainer Matt Laurie has escaped a penalty but has been convicted of presenting a horse to race with methamphetamine in its system.

Shockaholic tested positive to the drug commonly known as ice after he won at Echuca in April.

Laurie pleaded guilty on Thursday to presenting the horse to race with a banned substance in its system but the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board found he was not directly to blame.

Under the rules of racing, the ultimate liability rests with the trainer if a horse is presented to race with a prohibited substance.

When Laurie was informed of the positive swab in June he issued a statement saying there was a need for the racing industry to be alert to the possibility of contamination.

"The report has identified an important issue for the racing industry in respect of the use of prohibited substances by persons involved in the industry and the potential for contamination of the horses in their care," Laurie's statement said.

"There is no reason to believe that the racing industry is isolated from the prevalence of drug use in the community generally."

Shockaholic has been disqualified from its win.
