Melbourne Cup runners have filled the placings in another 3200m Cup race, this time at Sandown.

The David Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Almoonqith took out the Sandown Cup on Saturday, defeating The Offer and Grand Marshal.

Almoonqith finished 18th to Prince Of Penzance in the Melbourne Cup and Hayes said the stayer had come out of the run as though he had never raced.

"I haven't had two horses come out of the Cup better in my life than Criterion and this horse," Hayes said.

"Normally after the Cup they feel it."

Hayes said Almoonqith will now be spelled with the Sydney Cup at Randwick in the autumn the target.

He said he was likely to resume a light autumn campaign in the Australian Cup.

"I don't want to over-race him in the autumn and the plan is to have him back in the spring," Hayes said.

"Almoonqith would be an ideal horse for the Sydney Cup and then back for the Melbourne Cup."

Hayes said Walker's ride was outstanding for a jockey who has been battling a niggling hip injury that will force the rider to have surgery next month.

Walker said he found a perfect spot aboard Almoonqith in the run but was worried about the slow tempo as the stayer can over-race.

A drifter from $5.50 out to $8.50, Almoonqith scored by a length from The Offer ($6) with Grand Marshal ($4.80) a length away third.

Dwayne Dunn said The Offer found early trouble that put him two lengths further back than intended, but conceded his mount was outsprinted by the winner.

With Who Shot Thebarman coming out of the Melbourne Cup and going on to win the Zipping Classic earlier in the day, Hayes is hoping the Melbourne Cup form can carry over to Hong Kong for Criterion.

Precedence who contested four Melbourne Cups and was Bart Cummings' last Cup runner, finished 11th at his final race start.
