Jockeys hurt as race fall mars Mudgee Cup

Friday 4 December 2015, 6:54pm

Six jockeys have been hurt in fall involving almost half of the field which has marred the running of the Mudgee Cup.

In front of a big Cup day crowd at the central west NSW racetrack, five riders came to grief while another was forced to retire his mount from the race at the central west racetrack on Friday.

Prominent NSW jockeys Greg Ryan, Jay Ford and Kody Nestor were among the riders involved in the fall.

Stewards said all jockeys were conscious and responsive as they received medical treatment on the racetrack.

But Nestor has reportedly suffered the worst injuries with the leading bush rider airlifted to hospital with shoulder and leg concerns after coming off Scottish Border.

Ford told Sky Racing he thought he had broken his hand after being dislodged from Are You Sure.

Ryan and Aaron Bullock were reportedly concussed while Leanne Henry and Glenn Lynch suffered facial injuries.

Henry's mount Pippi's Pride finished the race, one of only seven of the 13 runners to complete the course.

Replays showed Bullock's mount Devilgate Road, who was racing behind the leader, stumbled and fell soon after the field settled.

Devilgate Road, racing in third position, came into contact with the running rail, causing a chain reaction at the 1200m.

The meeting was abandoned with one race remaining.

Amid the chaos, the race was won by the $26 outsider Fox Solid, ridden by comeback jockey Andrew Banks for Wellington trainer Glenn McCarney.

A nine-year-old, Fox Solid defeated Tamworth galloper Topmast ($15) by 1-1/4 lengths with Wild And Proud ($17) the same margin away third.
