Familiar names find new home in Dwyer yard

Wednesday 9 December 2015, 1:07pm

Henry Dwyer heads to Flemington with two newcomers to his stable which are already well-known names to punters.

Dwyer recently took over the training of Boomwaa and Precious Gem which line up at headquarters on Saturday.

Boomwaa, previously trained by Robbie Laing, has already raced for Dwyer while Precious Gem joined his stable from Gwenda Johnstone's after finishing down the track at Sandown on November 14.

Dwyer said he was still discovering quirks with both horses.

Boomwaa contests the Western Health Foundation Handicap and was short of a run when a fading first-up eighth at Moonee Valley on November 28.

"We were trying to get a guide on how he races best and how best to prepare him," Dwyer said.

"It didn't pan out right in terms of having an underdone horse.

"They went really hard and he got taken on in front, plus he got in the wrong part of the track.

"It was a bit of a nothing run, but a good fitness builder."

The four-year-old, a son of Mutawaajid, has paid the penalty for consistency through his career despite having won only two races.

Dwyer is contemplating running Boomwaa in the Christmas Stakes at Caulfield on Boxing Day or the Standish Handicap at Flemington on New Year's Day, but his performance on Saturday will have a bearing.

"He'd have to find a couple of lengths on Saturday to warrant going there otherwise we'll drop him back for a bit of a confidence booster in a ratings race," Dwyer said.

Dwyer has stables at Caulfield and a country base at Ballarat and both horses have settled in well to the city environment.

The trainer explained he's prepared another horse for the owners of Precious Gem which runs in the Building Engineering Trophy.

"They were just keen to see if we could find her half a length and try and get a stakes win with her before she retires," Dwyer said.

"She came to me in great order from the Johnstones but it's not ideal taking on these mares because you're on a hiding to nothing.

"We thought we'd try her in the city stable to start with and switch her to the country if needed, but she's been bombproof since the day she arrived."
