Magic Millions hopefuls in Doomben clash

Thursday 10 December 2015, 11:27am

The Magic Millions Classic picture should become clearer after several top chances clash in the Calaway Gal Stakes at Doomben.

On exposed form, Saturday's race looks stronger than the colts and geldings division, the Phelan Ready Stakes.

Calaway Gal rivals Zelady's Night Out and The Last Kiss were both brilliant winners at their only starts and trainer Tony Gollan says Zelady's Night Out has done well since her 4-1/2 length victory at Doomben on November 14.

"She has had a little freshen up but she has pleased me in the past week," Gollan said.

Zelady's Night Out shares the second line of betting for next month's Magic Millions 2YO Classic at $9 with Sydney youngster Capitalist a firm $3 favourite.

Gollan agrees Capitalist is the current pick of the interstate raiders and says Saturday's meeting at Doomben should sort out the best of the Queensland hopefuls.

"Peter Snowden's colt Capitalist seems the benchmark for the interstate horses. He was an outstanding trial winner this week and at this stage he is the one we have to beat," Gollan said.

"But we should have a better idea of the local hopes after Saturday's racing."

Zelady's Night Out crossed to lead from an outside barrier on debut and is drawn more favourably in barrier three on Saturday.

Trainer Steve O'Dea believes The Last Kiss will take improvement from her winning debut at Doomben on November 21.

"She did a few things wrong and still won. The experience should have been a benefit," he said.
