Most Saturdays, Blake Spriggs rides at the provincial meetings around NSW but his Listed victory on Sir John Hawkwood in the Christmas Cup at Randwick could bring about a change.
Spriggs puts in the hard yards for owner Paul Fudge's Waratah Thoroughbreds and has partnered Sir John Hawkwood in the former European stayer's three starts for trainer David Vandyke.
"I owe it all to Paul," Spriggs said.
"I have been riding for him for the last 18 months and six months ago he said he wanted to use me more in town.
"It's great to win for him. This horse worked so well on Tuesday it gave me a lot of confidence coming to this race.
"I knew he wouldn't stop."
Sir John Hawkwood was the $5 third favourite in Saturday's Christmas Cup (2400m) and settled in the second half of the field.
Spriggs made his move at the top of the straight with favourite Jiayuguan ($3.60) also coming from behind.
She chased Sir John Hawkwood down the straight but the gelding was full of running to win by a half neck with the same margin to Lucky Lucky Lucky ($6.50).
Vandyke will now target the Tatt's Cup (2400m) at Randwick on New Year's Day.
After beginning his career with Sir Michael Stoute in England, the gelding has had stints with Craig Ritchie and Peter Moody in Australia before joining Vandyke.
