Nick Hall ready for return at Caulfield

Tuesday 22 December 2015, 4:19pm

A refreshed and healthy Nick Hall will make his return to racing at Caulfield after more than seven months out of the saddle.

Hall has undergone two wrist operations since he last rode in May and can't wait for Saturday.

He has seven mounts including the Robert Smerdon-trained Reldas in the Listed Christmas Stakes over 1200m.

Hall began trackwork just under two weeks ago and competed in his first set of trials last Friday.

The first operation, a bone graft, didn't take, and Hall underwent further surgery to remove the graft, the screws and part of the scaphoid joint that was giving him trouble.

"Now they're just letting it fill in with scar tissue and that will give me ten good years," Hall said.

After the original operation, Hall took the opportunity to travel, attending two overseas weddings while at the same time keeping himself fit.

The jockey was expecting to be back riding at the spring carnival until he found out he needed a second operation.

Apart from the surgery, the biggest change is that Hall now follows a mostly vegan diet, with an occasional fish meal.

The new diet will help Hall ride at the minimum of 54kg on Saturday and he's looking forward to getting back to racing, which hasn't always been the case.

"Usually it came around to Thursday, Friday and I was wasting and it was hard work, but I'm actually looking forward to it on Saturday," he said.

"I've had big problems in the past and that's what's taken me on this vegan approach.

"My weight's been pretty good but I do have to watch what I eat."

So far the comeback has gone smoothly with no pain in the wrist and just a bit of tenderness in the legs with muscle sorerness which Hall said was expected.

"I've got more trials on Wednesday then a couple of rest days and then I'll be in to it," he said.
