Reneged pulls out plenty to win WF maiden

Trainer John Thompson is entitled to be feeling some extra satisfaction after the win of the fittingly named Reneged at Warwick Farm.

Thompson outbid Buffering's trainer Rob Heathcote to buy the three-quarter brother to the multiple Group One-winning sprinter for $100,000, only to find himself without an owner.

"I bought him for a fellow who wanted me to get him a horse but he reneged on the deal," Thompson said.

Luckily for the trainer, he bumped into Prime Thoroughbred's Joe O'Neill at the sale and O'Neill offered to syndicate the son Of Mossman with Thompson retaining a share.

With the help of a smart ride by Tye Angland, the three-year-old improved from a fifth on debut at Goulburn to land his maiden win.

Reneged ($21) finished resolutely to defeat In Mum's Memory by a half-length in Wednesday's TAB More Than Just Winning Handicap.

Thompson has a nice opinion of the colt and plans to give him a freshen-up with the Brisbane winter carnival in mind.

He said the horse caught his eye as a yearling because Reneged reminded him of Buffering who was often stabled with Thompson when he travelled to Sydney.

"Rob (Heathcote) was the underbidder and he wasn't happy," Thompson said.

"A lot of the Mossmans are small and stocky whereas he's big and scopey.

"He's not a speed horse like Buffering. He's going to be a miler but I just liked him and obviously Rob did too."

Earlier in the day diminutive filly Edge Away proved size doesn't matter with a determined win in the Cellarbrations Plate.

It was an overdue victory for the three-year-old who had finished second in five of her eight starts.

Trainer Gerald Ryan said what Edge Away lacked in stature she made up for with courage.

"She would be flat out being 15 hands and she's 410 kilograms," Ryan said.

"She would be the smallest horse in my stable and probably the smallest horse racing here today but one thing she's got is she tries her heart out."

Edge Away had support from $15 into $12 and scored by half a length over favourite Yuma Desert with Sugar Bay Leonard third.
