Tom Melbourne wins well at Sandown

Wednesday 23 December 2015, 5:35pm

Imported stayer Tom Melbourne is still a work in progress but connections have been left impressed by the lightly raced stayer's front-running win at Sandown.

Sporting the colours of OTI Racing, the Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained Tom Melbourne took up the running in Wednesday's Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa Plate (2100m) and raced to a 2-1/4 length victory at his fourth Australian start.

He won his only start in Ireland a year ago before being secured by OTI.

Glen Boss, who picked up the ride on race morning, said Tom Melbourne had a few quirks and he felt the key to Wednesday's win was being able to get him in a good rhythm out in front.

"I let him roll along at a nice tempo and he got into a nice rhythm and relaxed well and was breathing terrific," Boss said.

"I love the way he was very strong the last quarter and through the line, and I couldn't pull him up for another half a mile.

"Lee's got himself a nice stayer, for sure."

Freedman described Tom Melbourne as a "confidence horse" who would continue learning with added maturity.

"He stays well," Lee Freedman said.

"He's only a young horse and this was only his fifth start, so there's plenty of improvement in him.

"In terms of ability, we've just got to iron out a few things. He's a confidence horse and if you get him upset in any way, it's all over."

Tom Melbourne ($6.50) defeated I'm A Tiger with another long neck to Tarangower.

The 2100m event was one of two $80,000 races added to Wednesday's program after last Saturday's Flemington meeting was called off because of extreme heat.

Tom Melbourne brought up a winning double for Boss after he partnered three-year-old Praecereus, a brother to 2012 Queensland Derby winner Brambles, to a maiden win on the card.

Praecereus was the middle leg of a winning treble for trainer Peter Moody who also won with unbeaten three-year-old Vostok and four-year-old mare Spectacular Vision.

Steven Arnold was suspended for 10 meetings for careless riding on Subiaso in the race won by Spectacular Vision.

His ban starts after Boxing Day and he can return on January 6.
