Sea Red ready to realise full potential

Wednesday 30 December 2015, 1:55pm

Sea Red is primed to make a belated open company debut as a five-year-old after frustrating her trainer over the past year.

The Robert Heathcote-trained mare runs in Saturday's Sky Racing Open Hcp (1600m) at the Sunshine Coast after recording two wins in restricted class.

Heathcote has always had a big opinion of Sea Red who he thought could make a Queensland Oaks filly after she scored two barnstorming wins at Doomben as a three-year-old.

However, Sea Red has never lived up to that form although she did appear near her best with consecutive wins in September 2014.

When Sea Red again lost form Heathcote decided to solve the problem once and for all by sending her to the Queensland University for tests.

"Basically they inject a dye into the horse and give them a full body scan. The scan picked up a hot spot we hadn't been able to detect in one of her legs," Heathcote said.

"We then decided to give her a good three-month spell. I'm not sure the hot spot was even the main problem but what it did was encourage us to spell her for a good while."

He said Sea Red appeared to be back near her best since her return.

"In her past two wins she has come from last and blown them away. The key to her is a good racing surface and a fast pace," he said.

"It has taken a while for her to get to open company but I think she will prove a good quality mare."

Heathcote expects to play a major role in Saturday's race as he will also start Lordag and Bewhatyouwannabe.

"Lordag was a terrific second in the Bernborough Handicap and his overall form has good first rate," he said.

"Bewhatyouwannabe has had no luck lately. Bewhatyouwannabe has either been caught deep or we have been forced to ride him forward."

He also has Volkhere in the Butler McDermott Open Hcp (2200m) with the gelding aiming for his third straight win.

"Volkhere holds his form once he reaches his top but this is a bit harder than last time so I decided to claim two kilograms with Matt McGillivray on him," Heathcote said.

Meanwhile, Heathcote's star sprinter Buffering will work with three-year-old Group One placegetter I'm Belucci between races at Doomben on Friday in preparation for next week's Magic Millions day.

"At this stage Buffering will be running in the Millions QTIS only race and be very hard to beat," Heathcote said.

The Desleigh Forster-trained I'm Belucci is being aimed at a first-up tilt at the Magic Millions Guineas.
